Marcos Medina was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1997. He is a contemporary artist, graduated from Escuela Especializada Central de Artes Visuales, where he specialized in Drawing and Painting directed by Prof. Eluciano Vega. He obtained his Summa Cum Laude BFA in Printmaking, with a minor in Painting, at Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico, in 2020. This under the guidance of professors such as Haydée Landing, Marcos De Jesús Carrión, and Javier Maldonado-O'Farrill. Through his years of formation and experimentation, he found his visual language in the fusion of xylography and painting, creating images that employ, mainly, the use of line, space, and high contrast, characteristic of engraving, and the use of light, stain and color of painting.
Medina captures the essence of both artistic practices, giving them a contemporary twist and exploring non-traditional media and supports. His work highlights social, economic, and cultural issues. He revisits history, creating relationships between the issues of the past and their relevance to today's most pressing conflicts. He also finds great inspiration and influence in the work of great Puerto Rican masters, such as Lorenzo Homar, Carlos Raquel Rivera, Rafael Tufiño and Francisco Oller.
